I have recently sat down with a friend wanting to start his own blog. He came to me to ask how to create one and what needs to be done before launching a blog. The main question was how much content he should have before he goes live. This is a great question because if you don't have any blog posts to show, (even if you are going to get readers) they are just going to look the other way and visit a blog that has something to read.

You want to make your blog look like it has been running for a while before you tell the world about it. In this blog post ill explain my answer to that question in every blog that I have launched I always followed these guidelines before I have let it out into the world. Maybe you could benefit from this.

Where to begin...

Once you have your blog set up and you are at the point of writing content. By producing this amount of content that I recommend in this post, you would be left with a few weeks of content and ideas ready to go.

1. Have at least 3-5 posts already published on your blog

Having a few blog posts already posted can make a whole difference to your reputation as a blogger. It gives something for your readers to come and visit your blog. People want to see more than a "welcome to my blog" post.

These posts should be spectacular to give your readers a taste of what is to come from you blog. They should cover a range of different topics that you are passionate about instead of just one topic elaborated.

2. Have 3-10 posts ready to be published

This has so many benefits for you. I know all this is a lot more work, but if its a niche you are passionate about, you should not have problems discovering topics to write about.

Having posts that are ready to publish can mean you can concentrate your mind elsewhere on things like promoting your blog, adding some social widgets and making a few adjustments. This doesn't put pressure on you to worry about what you need to write next. Having some posts backed ready to hit the publish button can work wonders for you.

Once your up and running keep these unpublished posts backed up so you always have at least 5 posts to publish just in case you get the dreaded writers block. If your thinking about publishing a blog post every week, having 5 means your settled for the month.

A lot of the top bloggers out there are doing it and can only mean that its working. Also having posts in reserve means that it can take a bit of pressure of you and wont leave you stressed out thinking "what am I going to write up next?"

3. Have a plan of what your blog posts are going to be

Start planning and writing down all the things you want to blog about. Aim for about 30 different ideas. I have an A4 sketch pad full of blog post ideas that I continually keep writing in. They are great and will give you something to focus on.

As this is one of the hardest things to do when starting a blog, its very wise to be able to keep planning about what you are going to write. Try and keep the juices flowing and keep the ideas coming to your head no matter how stupid you might think they are. In most cases the stupid ideas end up being the gold mines!

Set aside some of your valuable blogging time to create a brainstorm or a list of things you want to include in your blog.

Keep your blog post ideas close to you and keep adding to them as you progress. Eventually you will find you are never have to worry about not having something to write.
